Dietetics

Dietetics is the science of diet and nutrition

Nutrition plays a significant part in issues of national health, in prevention as well as in the healing process. While we very carefully monitor and follow an infant's daily calorie and nutritional intake, weight gain or loss, as adults or families, we very often commit the error of following erroneous information and beliefs in connection with our nutrition which later, unfortunately, end up adversely affecting us and our children, as well.

The dietitian's work may be divided into two parts:

  • One is the work concerning the healthy population wherein preventive advice is offered to help persons become aware consumers; recommendations are given and specific diets worked out not only to satisfy the palate but also to maintain good health; help with nutrition in such special situations as pregnancy or breast feeding, during temporary illnesses and medicinal treatments, body building and sports, etc.

  • The other is the work concerning dietary aspects of such illnesses as diabetes, gout, gastrointestinal disorders, problems of absorption and digestion, etc. and helping the Patients maintain their diet and change their dietary habits for the long term.

Such diseases as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and elevated fats levels (two together result in a “metabolic syndrome") are, of themselves, significant public health issues directly affecting cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in Hungary. These and other diseases such as tumors, osteoporosis, etc. may be the causal effects of nutrition, or may benefit from nutritional treatments.
