This programme is available to all patients of the National Spine Centre and is free of charge on a social security basis.
The aim of the programme is to treat "chronic, non-organic sleep deprivation (insomnia)" by developing behavioural strategies and changing habits that prevent sleep. The cognitive behavioural therapy methodology has been shown to be effective in cases of difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, early awakenings and unsatisfactory sleep quality, where persistent sleep problems are perpetuated by bad sleep habits.
The course of the programme:
The session is preceded by a complex assessment, where we try to get as accurate a picture of your symptoms as possible. If you are recommended to take part in the programme, you will first be asked to monitor your sleep patterns and collect data for 2 weeks using a sleep diary.
In the first session, we will work together to identify the problems by analysing the sleep diary and plan the next steps to achieve the goals. You will then be introduced to sleep induction, sleep improvement guidelines and sleep hygiene considerations, which will be adapted to your personal life in the sessions. The challenge of the next sessions is to identify and address negative thoughts and beliefs that have been triggered by sleep disturbance. Finally, we will go through the individual stumbling points that arise during the application of the programme and how to overcome them.
The 4-6 suitable programme relies on the activity of the participants, as the success of the treatment is based on the guidelines learnt in the sessions, on the permanent change of sleep habits and beliefs and on the persistent practice of new habits!
The sessions are led by Ada Dorottya Kása, clinical psychologist and Luca Németh, clinical psychologist candidate.
