Shorter Waiting List

The Waiting List for Spinal Surgery is Now Shorter

The yearly allotment of state financed surgical procedures at the National Center for Spinal Disorders has been increased.  Patients, who have been on our waiting list for several years, can now look forward to being called in for surgery within the next few months.

According to Peter Paul Varga, MD, Director General of the National Center for Spinal Disorders, in an interview given to InfoRádió, the two-year waiting list will, for all effects and purposes, be eliminated in 2014.  The list will be replaced with a waiting list of six-months, the European standard level.

Dr. Varga stated that the government worked together with the National Health Insurance Fund Administration (OEP) to determine the capacity increase necessary for maintaining a six-month waiting list.  “Their determination will guarantee that our waiting list will no longer grow to such magnitude.  We were also specifically promised that OEP will continually monitor the waiting list and make adjustments, as necessary”, stated the Director.

We also learned that of the 1800 surgical procedures performed each year most were acute or emergency cases.  With the 30 percent capacity increase, the 700 patients currently awaiting surgery will now all be treated by the end of the year and the new patients presenting for surgery in the meantime, will only have to wait six months.
